Ride-On Mowers

Lawn tractors and ride-ons cost quite a lot of money so getting the right one when shopping for a large lawn mower is very important

Definitely for the larger lawn and all ride on mowers come in about as many variations as pedestrian mowers. They can stripe or not, mulch or not and be big or small. They can also have a number of cutting heads depending on how large a machine you require. These can be rotary or cylinder mechanisms though rotary is by far the most common for domestic situations.

There are a few points that are worth mentioning when purchasing ride ons:

  • Get one with a floating deck – this means the cutting blade(s) undulate with the lawn contours thus minimising scalping
  • Make sure you can attach other lawn care equipment such as rake, spiking or slitting and aerating attachments
  • If you need a ride-on mower you must have a fairly large lawn. Therefore, get one with a roller. Big stripes on a big lawn look brilliant!
  • If you have tight areas the turning capability needs to be considered. Some turn on a sixpence!
  • Some collect the grass via a brushing system at the rear. On new mowers this can be very abrasive on the grass so don’t set it too low.
