A Quick Guide to Everything Lawn Cuttings

A Quick Guide to Everything

Knowing what chemicals and treatments can be applied together and in what order will give much, much better results!

PLEASE NOTE: this relates only to products on our website as products sourced from elsewhere may well behave differently.

Product Combinations

Headings below are the names of products followed by advice on their use in conjunction with other products.

Green-up Ferrous Sulphate, Winter Green Fertiliser and Evergreen Mosskill

Generally fine with most products but:

  • Do not use Winter Green on grass less than 3 months old (you can use MossOff)
  • Do not use Ferrous Sulphate on grass less than 2 months old at rates above 2g per metre (you can use MossOff)
  • The above includes over-seeded new grass
  • Ferrous Sulphate can be used up to 24 hours before seeding
  • Winter Green and Evergreen Mosskill can be used up to 3 days before seeding
  • Do not use any of them within one week before or after spraying lawn weed killer on whole lawn
  • Do not use them within 4 weeks of each other

Granular Fertiliser

There are no conflicts with other products and all granular fertilsers except Winter Green can be used with other products. Fertiliser is beneficial if not essential for best results in most procedures including weed killing, seeding, aerating and after scarifying

Grass Seed - also applicable to turfing

  • Do not apply lawn weed killer 2 months before seeding and do not apply Weedol on grass less than 3 months old and Resolva on grass less than 6 months old
  • Ferrous sulphate products including Winter Green should not be used within the first 3 months of seeding
  • Granular Fertiliser – apply on the day of seeding or when germinated for more reliable results
  • Soluble Fertiliser - will not work on seeded areas and shouldn’t be applied to young grass less than 3 months old
  • Ferrous  Suphate and Winter Green can be used up to 1 day and 3 days respectively before seeding as moss treatments

MossOff

Has no conflicts though we recommend the following:

  • Do not apply within 7 days of any other moss treatment
  • Do not apply over grass seed. Wait until 4 weeks after germination

Solugreen Soluble Fertiliser

  • Use as a booster feed between seasonal applications of granular fertiliser from April to August
  • Do not use on young grass less than 3 months old
  • Ferrous Sulphate or Liquid Lawn Weed Killer can be applied with or even mixed with it

Lawn Weed killer – ready to use

As this is sprayed directly on the weed it causes few problems though do keep it off seed or grass under 3 months old

Lawn Weed killer – concentrate for blanket spraying the lawn

Best applied between mid May and September

  • For best results apply one to two weeks after fertilising
  • Soluble Fertiliser can be mixed and sprayed together with lawn weed killer
  • Do not apply 2 months or less before seeding
  • Do not apply Weedol on grass less than 3 months old and Resolva on grass less than 6 months old
  • When planning to scarify it needs to be applied at least 4 weeks and preferably 8 weeks before to allow time to work
  • Leave a week between using ferrous sulphate products and lawn weed killer

Seaweed Bio-Bloom

A very safe product which is best applied straight after mowing, a few days before a granular fertiliser application and before seeding rather than after.

It can be used within a day or so of liquid fertiliser, ferrous sulphate and weed killer. We suggest using the seaweed first.

It can be tank mixed with low concentrations of ferrous sulphate and soluble fertiliser but not with weed killer. If tank mixing, it should be used immediately as a jelly like precipitate will form over a few hours. Rinse equipment thoroughly after use.

Wetting Agents

No conflict with other products. May enhance penetration and effectiveness of Ant Killer in dry conditions. Usually applied just prior to dryer weather as a preventative and/or during dry weather to improve water uptake and usage.

Effective just prior to seeding to help with water management. Both our wetting agents are beneficial to growth so can be incorporated into a renovation program without conflict.

Order of Tasks

A guide to the order of procedures for tasks below:

Aerating

Spiking

  • Beneficial anytime of the year as a standalone procedure
  • Spike after raking or scarifying and before seeding, weed killing, top dressing or feeding

Hollow Tine

  • As for spiking but only in early spring, late autumn or anytime to revive small compacted areas in combination with watering if dry

Fertilising

This is usually done after all procedures except for:

  • Lawn Weedkiller - for best results apply fertiliser 1 to 2 weeks before weed killing
  • Seeding - apply on the day of seeding or when germinated for more reliable results

Mowing

  • For best results mow prior to all treatments and tasks
  • The first cut after applying any product may be left on the lawn (if mower instructions allow)
  • Granular Fertiliser – apply immediately after mowing
  • Lawn Weed killer – apply 2 to 3 days after mowing. Do not mow for at least 3 days after
  • Ferrous Sulphate and Soluble Fertiliser – apply straight after mowing and do not mow for 7 to 10 days after applying.
  • Mow new lawns on highest setting for 3-4 months. Start when young grass is 5 to 8cm long
  • Mow over seeded lawns on normal schedule but on high setting for 2-3 months

Raking for Moss

You do not need to kill the moss to rake it out which gives you options as follows:

  • Mow reasonably close to allow spray to contact moss if using a moss killer first
  • If killing moss before raking is required apply liquid Green-up Ferrous Sulphate or granular Winter Green 3 to 30 days prior to raking
  • Mow close again if needed without scalping
  • Rake or scarify
  • You can now apply Green-up Ferrous Sulphate for the first or second time; alternatively use MossOff. If applying Ferrous Sulphate for the second time you must leave 3-4 weeks between this and the first application which is why MossOff is a good choice as it can be used at any time. Do not use Winter Green at this stage
  • If re-applying ferrous sulphate or MossOff wait 24 hours after as a light final rake may be required
  • Mow close without scalping immediately prior to over seeding
  • Over seed
  • Feed - apply on the day of seeding or when germinated for more reliable results
    • For spring treatment feed with one of our Spring & Summer fertilisers for SANDY soil even if on clay soil
    • For autumn treatment feed with our Autumn fertiliser
  • Water as needed
  • Mow on a normal schedule on a high setting for 2-3 months

Scarifying for thatch

  • Mow close without scalping
  • Scarify
  • Mow close without scalping immediately prior to over seeding
  • Over seed - see video to left for procedure
  • Feed - apply on the day of seeding or when germinated for more reliable results
    • For spring treatment feed with one of our Spring & Summer fertilisers for SANDY soil even if on clay soil
    • For autumn treatment feed with our Autumn fertiliser
  • Water as needed
  • Mow on a normal schedule on a high setting for 2-3 months

Seeding

  • New Lawns - Use a Starter fertiliser at the same time as seeding
  • Over Seeding - see Raking for Moss or Scarifying for Thatch above

Top dressing

  • Top dressing if desired should only be done after procedures such as mowing, scarifying, raking, and aerating
  • We suggest top dressing before feeding or over seeding though this depends on what book you read!
