  • Heavy Duty Aerator for compacted soils and lawns

  • Use in autumn for all over lawn aeration
  • Beneficial at any time for reviving dry patches or hard areas
  • Helps reduce moss in damp areas by improving drainage
  • Simple and cost effective for lawns upto 100m2
  • 10cm long tines
  • Not for use on heavy clay or very sandy soils
  • Now in lime green to prevent trips when left on lawn

TIP 1 Sharp Tines: Hollow tine aerators need sharp tines otherwise they are hard work. This unit is the strongest aerator we could find so has plenty of metal which can be sharpened without weakening it. Just take a large coarse file and set to work sharpening the outside (not the inside) of the tines. Look at the tines in the video.

TIP 2 Blocked Tines: Tines block if the soil consistency isn't right - either too soft or too stoney This is not a problem with this unit but is a problem with ALL hollow tines whether manual or powered. Ensure the soil is soft enough to penetrate after sharpening the tines (as in the video) but is not too soft that it 'squiggies' and blocks. A one metre piece of 10mm dowelling can be poked into the tine to clear any blockage without bending down. Sometimes it is trail and error until you get the soil consistency right.

TIP3 Clear or Smash Cores: Don't leave the cores on the lawn. Either use the flat back of a landscapers rake to collect them or let them dry and go over them with a rotary mower to smash them. This distributes the soil as a top dressing but only works if your mower instructions allow it to be used without the box. Wear eye protection.

Looks good - doesn’t penetrate our soil easily and blocks with every dig. Basically only useful for a lawn laid on perfect light loam.
A good idea, but a fork works much better

The tines clog much too easily making the tool extremely annoying to use.
I have tried sharpening the outside of the tubes as recommended by Lawnsmith.I hope this will eventually pay dividends but as the soil stuck to the outside of the tines as well I reserve judgement.

I purchased the aerator to improve my lawn but alas the ground is too hard for the aerator to penetrate the lawn.
I will try again after winter when hopefully the ground will be softer. I must add that the tool is very well made from welded steel and is very strong.

Will use this in autumn and spring. Item robust enough for the task.
Had a problem with delivery. Delivery damaged the original item. A new item was dispatched same day. Excellent customer service.

Didn’t work on my grass as even with all my weight it wouldn’t go into the soil. I even sharpened the tones and still didn’t do the job

Does not push cores out as demo in video with perfect garden even after sharpen if tines , video should explain that it will not produce cores on anything less than perfect soil , and it’s difficult removing blocked up tines even after the soils have had rain , so all it is doing is compacting soil underground when you remove tool as there will be holes which is contradicting purpose of tool

The lawn was very compacted following a winter of abuse of the lawn. The whole lawn had become a building site!! I found it difficult to use but my husband managed it ok. The ground needs to be soft.

A good product that does the job. It is a device that requires high levels of effort to use when you have heavy clay soil even after significant watering. It might be enhanced by widening the foot pressure plate as I ended up with plantar fasciitis.

Unfortnately my lawn is heavy compacted clay. The clay would not come out of the core so i only managed 6 insertions into the ground and then it wouldnt go in any more. I have left the clay to dry and will have to remove it.

Essential you sharpen and lubricate the tines. I used vegetable oil for this and worked will with no effects to the lawn. It was difficult to get the prongs down deep, I nearly ended up chopping 2 out in order for more pressure over less surface area to penetrate the soil. Also with very compact soil, have a piece of dowl to poke the plugs out. As they will struggle to push through the top as it’s designed to do. But overall a surprisingly sturdy bit of kit and does the job well with plenty of perseverance and prethought

Poor product. It gets clogged every time. In the video it shows the tines smoothly coming out, but I have found that, wet or dry, it just clogs up and is a pain to unclog.

I am using the item to aerate the lawn; unfortunately although a very substantial piece of equipment I had to resort to using a garden fork in areas where the grass is compacted; this is probably due to the large size of the tines! I researched item on the internet.

The aerator is solidly constructed, but needs quite a lot of work to make the tines sharp. I purchased a set of grinding tools for a Dremel and fixed them to my electric drill, which worked. When using the hollow tine aerator, it proved impossible in our clay soil to get the plugs of earth to rise out of the tines on their own, so I bought a length of 15 mm wooden towel and used this to push out the plugs by hand. Very arduous, but it works.
I also backfilled the holes using sharp sand to aid drainage

Not a job to be undertaken lightly. A small lawn (20sq.m) took about 90 minutes. Did after prolonged rain, to make penetration easier. The clay soil didn't always clear the tines but there were still plenty of plugs lying on the surface of the lawn when I'd finished. Raked over plenty of sharp sand. That was 3 weeks ago and waiting now to see if the rain drains away. Signs are good but won't know full effect till spring. Happy so far.

Although it looks reasonably solid, the usefulness of this tool depends on whether plugs of soil are reliably ejected from the tines. Perhaps it is sensitive to soil type and conditions, but on my slightly heavy soil, the tines simply blocked up every time. I gave up with it and resorted to using a garden fork.

The lawn look hammered after I had finished. However, its now draining well, and looks better than ever. Unfortunately, tined when the lawn was wet, so not 100% on the pellets produced by the fork

Great tool. Much as the same other reviews, keep it to a small lawn, mine is 75m2 and it took me the course of several days to complete the job. Also, though not recommended for clay based soils, mine is and it just meant that it was extra hard work than normal and can put the tine's at risk of breaking. Mine survived just fine and I was shocked to see what difference it makes in a week or two. Some areas of my lawn used to suffer a lot from stunted growth but they are now growing healthily as a result. Great tool and price but it's not a job for the faint hearted.

Suggestion- use a watering can to wet the prong areas. It makes the job easier.

Tines clog up and reduce penetration into compacted soil.

Rated 3 out of 5

by on 2017-04-11

Easy to use and gives a great result. My soil is clay-based and it is necessary to push the plugs out of the hollow tines by hand because of the stickiness of the soil so don't underestimate the amount of time it will take to do a large lawn by this method if you have a soil type that is likely to block up the hollow tines. Nevertheless the result of the effort is just what my lwan needs in the compacted areas.
