Why do I Keep Getting Moss in my Lawn

Moss will always come back if you don't keep on top of it. Our annual moss eradication plan which will keep your grass healthy and your moss out of sight.

Moss will always come back if you don't keep on top of it particularly if the conditions are right for moss in your lawn. It is a continuous battle but the correct procedure can result in an 80 to 90% reduction in moss making life in following years so much easier. The secrets to achieving this are:

  • Follow the procedure at the correct time of year
  • Do not be tempted to start too early in spring
  • Be thorough and don't cut corners

Following the plan will keep your grass healthy and the moss at bay.

Our Suggested 12 Month Moss Eradication Plan

This is by no means fixed so be prepared to be flexible depending on your preferences and the severity of moss. The plan can be started at any point and requires a full 12 month cycle to maximise effectiveness.

YEAR 1

WINTER

  • use Winter Green once to feed, control moss and maintain grass health
  • any moss recurrence should be controlled with either MossOff or Green-up Ferrous Sulphate

SPRING

  • 2 weeks prior to raking moss you have the opportunity to apply your preferred moss killer from our range. This would usually be late March onwards for southern England and April onwards for everyone else.
  • Applying a moss killer at this stage does help reduce the bulk of the moss and makes it easier to rake out. Though it kills the moss you will not get it all with one treatment before raking. If you have a lot of moss it does give a better result.
  • Rake the moss out then apply a second treatment of either MossOff or Green-up Ferrous Sulphate only. A 4 week gap is required if using ferrous sulphate twice or a ferrous sulphate and Winter Green combination
  • After 2-3 days if using ferrous sulphate or 7-10 days if using MossOff you may need to rake lightly again prior to over seeding
  • Over seed - this fills in the gaps before nature fills them in with dandelions and also re-populates the lawn with new grass strains
  • Apply Spring Fertiliser over the whole lawn when the new seed germinates. Use either Spring & Summer for Sandy Soil or Natur

AUTUMN

  • Moss may re-occur during cooler wetter weather so use either MossOff or Green-up Ferrous Sulphate to suppress
  • If you need to scarify and there is moss present, follow the plan for Spring but start late August or early September depending on the weather. The objective is to have all procedures completed and with the seed planted well before it gets too cold for it to germinate.
  • Always apply an Autumn fertiliser afterwards

FOLLOWING YEARS - maintenance programme

The YEAR 1 programme should bring you back to a healthy, grassy rather than mossy lawn. If your lawn starts reverting rapidly back to moss something is causing this. It is either the conditions surrounding your lawn or your mowing needs adjusting. Read more here.
