Step 1: Find the Perfect Spot
Choosing the right location is important when planting your wildflower seeds, even though wildflowers will grow almost anywhere. Wildflowers are low maintenance, but our Shade Showcase is ideal for planting wildflower seeds in a shaded garden area. Similarly, if your planting area features heavy clay soils, a wildflower seed mix suited to these conditions will grow better. You can also plant our other wildflower seed mixes anywhere in your garden!
Step 2: Prepare the Soil
Before planting wildflower seeds, prepare the soil to provide an ideal environment for growth. Clear the planting area of any existing vegetation, weeds, or debris. Then, loosen the soil using a rake or garden fork, break up clumps, and remove rocks. This step improves soil aeration and drainage, creating the perfect environment for your seedlings.
Step 3: Choose the Right Seeds
Finding the right wildflower seeds for your garden will ensure you get the pop of colour and shapes you want. We have various wildflower species and mixes to choose from, so there will be something for everyone! Consider the climate and soil conditions in your area when selecting the seeds. Our wildflower seed mixes are well-suited to the environment in the UK, and they don’t require much maintenance once planted!
Step 4: Sowing your Wildflower Seeds
Planting wildflower seeds can be done in a few different ways, depending on your preferences and the seed type. Follow these general steps to plant wildflower seeds successfully:
Scattering the Seeds
Scatter the seeds by hand over the prepared soil at 5g per m2. Walk slowly and spread the seeds in a sweeping motion, covering the entire planting area while not scattering the seeds too close together.
Raking the Seeds
After scattering the seeds, gently rake the area with a garden rake and then firm them down by foot. This ensures good seed-to-soil contact, which is vital for successful germination. Avoid raking too deeply, as it can bury the seeds too deep in the soil.
Step 5: Water and Maintain
After sowing the seeds, water the area regularly for the first six weeks, especially if there is no rainfall. Keep the soil consistently moist until the seedlings become established. We recommend using the ‘spray’ setting on your hose or a sprinkler system so you don’t risk washing the seeds away. Once the wildflowers start growing, regular watering will not be necessary unless there is an extended period of drought.
Once you’re past the six-week mark, you can let our UK weather do the rest of the watering!
Step 6: Weed Control and Maintenance
While wildflowers are more resistant to pests and diseases than cultivated plants, weeds can still show their face and often get in the way! Keep an eye on the area and dig out any weeds that appear before they compete with the wildflowers for resources. Once fully grown, wildflowers will naturally suppress weed growth and outgrow the competition.
Step 7: Enjoy the Beauty of Newly Planted Wildflower Seeds
As your wildflowers grow and bloom, take the time to appreciate their beauty and positive environmental impact. Observe the wildlife attracted to your garden, such as bees, butterflies, and birds. It also allows the wildflowers to complete their life cycle, including producing seeds for the next generation of flowers.
