How To Maintain Your Wildflower Meadow

Wildflowers are well known for being low maintenance, but to keep them coming back year after year they do require some taking care of. If you want your wildflowers to return each year so you can enjoy them again and again, they will need a little bit of encouragement. Keep reading below for an easy-to-follow, step-by-step guide on maintaining your wildflower meadow.

To get your wildflowers to come back year after year, here’s everything you’ll need:

  • A pair of garden shears or a strimmer

  • Envelopes

At the end of their first blooming season, you will notice the leaves of your wildflowers will turn brown. This signals the end of their bloom, and it’s time to cut them down to kickstart their growth for the following year.

Use your garden shears or strimmer to cut your wildflowers to 7cm. As you do this, the seed heads will have dropped onto the soil surface. Remove the majority of the clippings, but leave the seed heads behind.

Firm them into the soil by foot to embed them, and your wildflowers should return the following year.

Seed saving is also a great way to ensure the return of your favourite wildflowers. Again, at the end of the blooming season, your wildflowers will become crisp, brown, and full of seeds.

Envelopes are an inexpensive way to collect seeds and keep them organised. Label your envelopes so you know exactly what you’re sowing.

Have your envelope handy, grab the seedhead, shake the seeds out into the envelope and seal.

Keep your seeds stored in a cool, dry place. Do not store them in plastic, as this will encourage condensation.

Then, in Autumn or Spring, you can sow your saved seeds again!
