Utility and play lawns need to be quickly repairing and hard wearing to maintain a covering of grass. This means they must contain a good proportion of dwarf rye grass. This rye grass variety is quite fine without being coarse and makes for a great looking lawn on a medium to high cut. It is by no means a 'budget' lawn!

Sowing Rates

  • New lawn: 35 grams per m2
  • Over seeding: 25 to 50 grams per m2

Mowing Height

  • Normal use: 1" to 11/2" (2.5 to 4cm)
  • Heavy use, winter or drought: 2" or above (5cm plus)

Grass Seed Mixture

  • Dwarf perennial rye grass
  • Strong creeping red fescue

The Seeding Secret

There are many 'miracle' patch, repair and seed packs that claim to germinate and grow quicker than the next! The secret - a bit of fertiliser! So, for new lawns or patching sow your seed between April and September, have the sprinkler ready if it doesn't rain and feed your new seedlings with a STARTER feed to speed establishment and bring your new lawn into use sooner. For established lawns when overseeding use a seasonal fertiliser; the 'sandy soil' version is the best for this situation as it contains a broader range of nutrients compared to the 'clay soil' version thus looking after both your existing grass and the new seedlings better.

Bougth Easygrass seeds - grass growing after a few weeks in Oct.

Had a 50/50 SC Red Fescue & Perennial Rye mix for my heavy-clay garden.

Started appearing after 6 or 7 days and grew quickly. My soil obviously holds onto water for dear life but the grass seems to be quite content with that so far.

In terms of distribution, my approach was "grab a handful and sort of scatter it about as evenly as possible then tread on it loads" and that seems to have worked nicely.

I used way way more than I needed but that's on me; the instructions on the seed bag are crystal clear and very helpful.

We scarified/fed in mid October, then used this as overseed and patch repair, already coming up nicely.

Too early to give 5 stars. Three weeks in and it's looking good.
