I fed my lawn with a weed & feed treatment and it's now gone black!!!
Because I am new to gardening I was unaware that if I did not water the lawn within a couple of days, it would burn. The result being that 75% of my lawn has gone black. What can I do to solve this problem? James
I suspect you and several thousand others have done the same. Combined and all-in-one weed and feed products by their very nature need care and accuracy in applying which is why people give up treating the lawn because they see it as a hazardous excercise (and who can blame them)!
Unfortunately it is hard to tell at this stage what will happen as you may have killed the grass or it may just be damaged and therefore a temporary problem. Waiting to find out might also be a bad idea because weeds and weed grasses will start to take over the dead or damaged grass. I would therefore over sow with new grass seed to be on the safe side. You may need to water the lawn or wait for rain if the lawn is dry.
Hopefully you and others will take a different approach after such an experience by applying fertiliser as one treatment and a liquid weed killer as another treatment. This way as long as you have some soil moisture you don't need to water it in or worry about rain. Have a read of this section for fertilising, this section for weed killing and you will find safe lawn care products in our shop.
Finally, learn from this and don't give up. You've got brownie points for trying.

Bare patches after using Evergreen Complete
My neighbour has spread Evergreen Complete 4 in 1 fertilizer on my lawn for me. I have some bare patches: how soon can I sow new grass seed, please? Thank you for your advice, which will be appreciated.
Hi Robert
If the bare patches are from the 4 in 1 then you may need to wait a few weeks before putting in seed. If not then go ahead straight away. If it is, don't let your neighbour use 4 in 1 again!

New lawn and Evergreen Complete
When can I use evergreen complete on a new lawn. I bought rolls of turf and layed it at the start of april 2011.
Scott
Evergreen Complete contains pesticide or weed killer. Though these target weeds, like all medications and chemicals they have side effects. For example, Scotts Verdone which is an excellent weed killer should only be used once per year because excess affects the grass.
Therefore, only use pesticides when you have to and then only on mature lawns. Yours is young and tender with I suspect no weeds. So just use a fertiliser that will feed with no side effects; any of our Spring & Summer lawn fertilisers will do the trick - yes, it's a plug but also good advice!
All the best

Black footprints after using 4 in 1
Just put 4 in 1 feed on the lawn, unfortunately had to walk on the lawn after treatment, after heavy rain overnight, the lawn where we walked on has turned BLACK, should I be worried about this, and is there anything I can do to cure this??
Hi Alex
I've not heard of foot prints being left in the lawn after using 4 in 1 though it doesn't surprise me due to the nature of the product. You've just found another reason to do what the professionals do and apply products seperately and the reason we don't sell weed and feed combined products. To me 4 in 1 is a bit like having dinner which has been put into the blender with toothpaste, anti-biotics and a pain killer. Not going to work too well and more than likely give you a queezy tummy!
Anyway, the bad news is there isn't much you can do about it now the damage is done. The good news is that it is more than likely just the leaves of the grass that have blackened and the plant is still alive and will grow back over the next few weeks with little lasting damage.
Whilst you're here please take a look at our fertiliser and weed control products. They are easy to use, you and your family can use the lawn after application and they do a better job.

Black lawn after using Evergreen 4 in 1
I have new turf 5 months old, had red thread all over with bleached patches so I sprayed with fungiside. 2 days later fed with evergreen 4in1. Now the lawn is going black, will it recover?? I read that this shouldnt be used until turf 6 months old. Garden center said it be ok!
Dave
Commisserations to start with; you're trying to do the right thing but not getting very far. This is exactly why people give up on their lawns but I'm glad to see you are hanging in there. Hopefully now you have found Lawnsmith you'll have a great lawn. Okay, here are the answer(s):
-
Forget fungicide - you'll only ever apply it after the damage is done so no point! Read our article on red thread and you'll understand what to do next time
-
Your lawn is new turf - no weeds and no moss but Evergreen 4 in 1 contains moss and weed killer which you don't need and are also the elements that are more likely to affect new grass. Your garden centre should have advised just fertiliser with no additives. I feel that new turf at 5 or 6 months old wouldn't have made that much difference
-
There is little you can do at present other than make sure there is plenty of water in the lawn. This will dilute the strong product and help recovery. The chances are the damage isn't permanent but if it is get some Grass Seed into the dead patches in early September. Read the above FAQ's for a bit more help
Finally, had you found us first (better late than never) you'd have been able to treat everything with 100% safety by using one of our Spring & Summer Fertilisers though I wouldn't consider adding more until perhaps end September when you can use our Autumn Fertiliser. You'll start getting more weeds next year so just keep on top of them with a spot weed killer and you won't turn the lawn black ever again!

What is the best sprayer nozzle?
Is there a bar with multiple nozzles for applying liquid fertilizers from a knapsack sprayer. If not what is the appropriate single nozzle to use? I want to apply FeSO4.
Stephen
Yes there are but they a notoriously tricky and you'll rarely see a professional or green keeper using one.
The best nozzle to use is a deflector nozzle. They don't fit all sprayers though.
