Lawn Aeration & Equipment
Breathing is rather important!
All life needs air just as it needs water. For plants, air is just as important around the roots as it is around the leaves and this is no different for your lawn.
Over time soil naturally settles and compacts, often aided by tree roots and human activity. This consolidates the soil by squeezing the particles closer together forcing out the air spaces. Without air spaces the soil is unable to hold air or water thus producing a lifeless unhealthy lawn. Aeration and de-compaction reverses this process enabling the soil to provide a healthy supply of air and water to the grass.
Next to lawn mowing and fertilising, aerating is the next most important thing to do for your lawn. Unfortunately, because the results aren't immediate this means that lawn aeration is rarely done and even more rarely done properly!
Your lawn may last for many years without aerating but ultimately, lack of aeration leads to an unhealthy looking lawn that grows unevenly and with a continuous weed and moss problem. So, if you’re a reluctant gardener do the areas that need it; the kiddies play area, around the clothes line or the postman’s shortcut (see Localised Lawn Aeration) Otherwise, follow the Lawnsmith approach to improving the health of your lawn with some clever lawn aeration equipment.
