Relying on me or a book for all your lawn weed and feed needs is not possible if you are looking to achieve perfection. I can guide you with a ‘base’ feeding regime to maintain a general level of fertility. However, to achieve the best you are going to have to start ‘reading’ the grass and letting it tell you when it wants more or less as the case may be. This will come as you gain knowledge and experience and start to understand how the weather, particularly rain and temperature affect growth and the demand for lawn feed.
Start with the test for clay or sandy soil. Then when you come to buy your fertiliser you can select the appropriate Spring & Summer Fertiliser* - there is one for clay soil and one for sandy soil.
SPRING Fertiliser

SUMMER Fertiliser
-
SPRING & SUMMER Lawn Feed* coated 2-3 month slow release fertiliser
-
Apply at the lean end of 20 - 30 grams per square meter for normal conditions
- Apply at the high end of 20 - 30 grams per square meter for wet conditions
Or for greater control
-
Soluble Lawn Fertiliser - quick release
-
Apply at 5 grams per square metre dissolved in water
-
One to three applications every 3-6 weeks depending on temperature and rainfall
AUTUMN Fertiliser
-
AUTUMN Lawn Feed* soil soluble 2-3 month slow release fertiliser
-
Apply 20 – 30 grams per square metre
DO NOT apply fertiliser in drought conditions - it's a waste of money as it won't do any good - wait until conditions change
For exceptionally fine ornamental lawns cut below 12mm
You may wish to use SPRING & SUMMER 'Fine' Lawn Feed instead of the coated slow release fertilisers. This is an ultra fine soil soluble granular fertiliser providing high grass safety and no risk of mower pick-up or burn due to mower damage to the fertiliser granules. Ideal for close mown turf and perfectly suited to clay soils @ 20 – 25 grams m2 or sandy soils @ 25 - 30 grams m2.
